Tribute to Sid Hall
Sid was a special man in my life. He inspired me and believed in me. Slowly and carefully, with honesty and patience he made me into the writer I am today.
I will never forget the courage it took for me to send this special editor a rough copy of the book I was struggling to write. A few days later when he wrote to me he said; “I went up to my country home, bundled up in front of my wood burning stove and started reading the draft you sent me. I ended up staying up all night. Couldn’t put your book down until I finished it. What a fantastic story you have to tell.”
Need I say more about how Sid inspired me to take myself and my writing seriously. He edited my first book and ones that followed. My most recent book, THE FORGOTTEN FEW has Sid’s poem THE DEAD as a special feature on the first pages but you can read it here below. If you want to know more about Sid and/or would make a donation to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) please do read his obituary.
You can also ask me to send you a list of where you may purchase his books.
Sid, I will miss our precious friendship.

THE DEAD
By Sidney Hall Jr.
The dead are closer to us than the living.
The living go away to where they must,
Departing daily and hourly and coming back
Less than they were while we imagined them—
But the dead are always with us, not simply near,
Not clinging or attached or breathing close to us,
But riding our very marrow, pushing our blood,
Beating our hearts like some god, or God itself.
They go with us everywhere, even when we ourselves
Leave. Even when we go to look for them.
They go there too. The dead are closer to us
Than the living. They show us how to go.
